Julian RUSHTON: 'Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus', Grove Music Online ed. L. Macy (Accessed 10 May 2004), http://www.grovemusic.com :
"Mozart’s travels with his family to Vienna, France, England and the Netherlands (1763–6) displayed him as a keyboard prodigy and composer of instrumental music. He quickly became acquainted with opera, which in Austria and Germany was mostly Italian. In Paris the unreformed Opéra, bastion of a tradition particularly disliked by Leopold Mozart, contrasted with the more modern opéra comique dominated by Duni, Philidor and Monsigny.
[…] During his traumatic stay in Paris (1777–8) the opéra comique repertory provided themes for instrumental variations and Mozart experienced the regenerated repertory of the Opéra; but the ‘Querelle des Gluckistes et Piccinnistes’preoccupied the public and the management, and his only theatrical music was a ballet, Les petits riens."
