"Constantin, Louis
(b Vexin district, nr Paris, c1585; d Paris, bur. 25 Oct 1657). French violinist and composer. He became one of the 24 violinists in the chamber of Louis XIII on 21 February 1619; in 1655 he passed on this position to his nephew, Antoine Desnoyers. In addition he was one of the governors of the chapel of St Julien-des-Ménétriers from 1620 and from 12 December 1624 Roy des joueurs d’instruments, an office which conferred on him the right to levy throughout France the taxes that had to be paid before anyone could enter the profession of instrumentalist;…. He was considered one of the great virtuosos of his time […] Most of his works, gathered together in the Philidor collection (F-Pn), have disappeared […]"
