He took the particule from a property he bought, in the best Ancien Régime tradition. […] He was a somewhat ailing bachelor until the end of his days and his most famous play, the play which was seen by his contemporaries not only as his masterpiece but as one of the greatest plays of the eighteenth century, has a bachelor as its central character. […] Initially, he had followed his father's footsteps and studied law in Paris, beginning to practice in Chartres in 1780. By that time, however, he had already written his first comedy, L'Inconstant. […]"
