"Orlandini, Giuseppe Maria (b Florence, 4 April 1676; d Florence, 24 Oct 1760). Italian composer. […] Orlandini’s work as an opera composer began in the first years of the 18th century under the patronage of Prince Ferdinando de’Medici. From 1711 he styled himself maestro di cappella to Gian Gastone (Prince and, from 1723, Grand Duke of Tuscany), but it is unlikely that he served continuously at court. In fact he soon moved to Bologna, where he married the singer Maria Maddalena Buonavia and, in 1719, became a member of the Accademia Filarmonica. His residence in Bologna is documented from 1717 to 1731. Performances of some of his operas in Venice brought him much acclaim. […] Orlandini returned to Florence in 1732, when he was appointed maestro di cappella at S Maria del Fiore and to the Medici court. The post was confirmed by the Lorraine successors to Gian Gastone (1737). These new duties did not interrupt the production of operas, which he regularly provided for the Florentine theatres La Pergola and Il Cocomero. In the 1740s Orlandini, who had previously composed some successful intermezzos, among them Il marito giocatore e la moglie bacchettona, also tried his hand at commedia per musica."
