"Louis Lully
(b Paris, 4 Aug 1664; d Paris, 1 April 1734). Composer, the eldest son of Jean-Baptiste Lully. He did not have the successful career that was anticipated for him, partly because of his own dissolute conduct. After being imprisoned by the authority of justice in the religious house of the Charité at Charenton’, he was almost disinherited by his father. Subsequently, and against his family's wishes, in 1691 he married Marthe Bourgeois, by whom he had already had a child in 1690. His distressing behaviour and many debts prevented his taking up the posts he could have claimed: he never succeeded his father as director of the Opéra, or in any other position. Moreover, he was of questionable talent. Those of his operas which did prove successful and were revived several times (Zéphire et Flore and Alcide) were written in collaboration with other composers […]"

Lully "avoit épousé la fille unique de Lambert, fameux Musicien, & en laissa entre autres enfans, deux fils, Louis, & Jean-Louis de Lully. […] Ces deux freres ont composé en société Zéphire & Flore. L'aîné [Louis - AS] a fait ensuite seul Orphée; Alcide, avec Marais; & les Saisons, conjointement avec Colasse."
