    "Berthélémy, Jean-Simon (b Laon, 5 March 1743; d Paris, 2 March 1811). French painter and costume designer. He won the Prix de Rome for painting in 1767, and his friendship with François-Guillaume Ménageot dates from this period. From 1770 to 1774 he was in Rome, at the Académie de France, and in September 1787 he joined the Opéra as Louis-René Boquet’s assistant, taking over from Ménageot, who had just been appointed director of the Académie de France in Rome. In 1791 he succeeded Boquet and became official costume designer to the Opéra. […] On 29 December 1807 he tendered his resignation to the Opéra for health reasons, and returned the post to Ménageot."
