  • Desarbres

"He was a poor actor, except in parts specially written for him; Fétis pronounced him not even a good singer, saying that his taste was poor and that he had several bad tricks. Nevertheless he had warmth and animation, and the beauty of his voice, which, though a baritone, extended into the tenor range, so far atoned for everything that for a long time no opera could be successful in which he had not a part."
  • Pitou
Pitou 1715-1815, p. 328-32 : "Lays, or Lay, François (b. 14 February 1758, La Barthe de Nestès, Gascony; d. 30 March 1831, Ingrande) vocalist…" [destined to priesthood, he gets his first lessons in music at the monastery of Guarison; leaves for Toulouse and is soon called to Paris Opéra: debut in 1779. Involved in revolutionary propaganda in the south of France. Attached to the New Conservatoire in 1795; then the School of Singing and Declamation at the Restoration until 1826.] "His voice was somewhat heavy, moreover, and he lacked the ability ot discipline it and to give equal volume to its different registers. Yet it was an arresting voice with an unusual quality and strength, and these features made possible the type of performance that the paying public expected."
